Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) prescribing in General Practice

You may have seen recent media coverage about Tirzepatide (also known as Mounjaro), a new medication for weight loss in people with obesity. Although it has now been approved for NHS use in England, it is not currently available through GP surgeries.

Locally, our NHS commissioner, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire ICB, are working to set up the necessary services to support this treatment.

Please be aware that we are unable to prescribe Mounjaro, or any other injections for weight loss, at the current time and we are not holding a waiting list.

To be eligible for Mounjaro you will need to have BMI of over 40 with at least FOUR of the following conditions:

  • Diagnosed hypertension
  • Diagnosed sleep apnoea
  • Diagnosed type 2 diabetes
  • Diagnosed cardiovascular disease
  • Diagnosed hypercholesterolaemia.

If you do not meet the above criteria, we cannot prescribe Mounjaro for you (based on the current guidance).

We will provide an update as soon as the service becomes available.
